VALVE GUIDE OIL SEALS.
An oil seal is fitted to all four guides in each head. These seals should be renewed as a matter of course whenever the valves are disturbed. Lubricate the valves and seals with engine oil on assembly.

| Before replacing the valves they should be lapped to the seats using fine grinding paste in the normal way. Should fine paste not enable a good seal to be achieved it may be necessary to reface the valve or to recut the seat. The appropriate dimensions are as shown. | |
| If metal is removed from the valve seat or head, check before refitting the cylinder head to the machine that the correct valve clearance can still be achieved using. the shims available. If necessary a small amount of metal may be removed from the stem of the valve, ensuring that the surface remains square to the valve stem. In such cases a better solution is to renew the valve itself. | |
